Shortly after 0400 hours on the morning of December 9, 2015 Box Alarm 30-70 was dispatched for a building fire in the 3700 block of Old Frederick Road in the Irvington section of southwest Baltimore. Engine 30 arrived to find a 2-story frame storefront building with heavy smoke pushing out and fire showing from the eaves of the roof. Companies attempted an interior attack but were driven back by the heavy smoke throughout and deteriorating fire conditions above them. They went to exterior operations. Battalion Chief 3 arrived on the scene and made it a working fire. Units proceeded to attack the fire with large hand lines and monitor pipes.
Units gained access to the second floor from the rear with their hand lines from the roof of a bump-out of the first floor. After about an hour crews were able to enter through the windows in the rear to finally extinguish the fire. The fire was placed under control at around 0530. No injuries were reported and Fire Investigation was called to determine the cause.
