Around 0200 hours on March 9, 2018 Box Alarm 46-30 was struck out for a reported dwelling fire in the 3500 block of Hayward Avenue in the Pimlico section of northwest Baltimore. First arriving units were met with heavy fire on the first and second floors of a 2 ½ story occupied frame duplex dwelling. Firefighters began an aggressive interior attack and when the fire broke through the roof Command ordered personnel to evacuate the building. A second alarm was struck out at 0233 and a collapse zone was established. Ladder pipes were set up along with large diameter hand lines to battle the blaze.
At around 0320 the front wall gave way and the entire dwelling collapsed into a pile of rubble. Units remained on the scene well into the early morning dousing hot spots and moving debris to get at other hidden pockets of fire.
Both units were occupied but there was no electric service to one of the units. Neighborhood Services were notified to take care of the displaced residents. Everyone got out before the Fire Department arrived. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
