On August 20, 2020 a horrific fatal accident involving the Baltimore Light Rail occurred in downtown Baltimore. Around 0730 hours an automobile traveling eastbound on Mulberry Street apparently ran a red light and was struck by a southbound light rail train at Howard Street. The train and car travelled a short distance down the track when a northbound train on the adjacent track struck it and wedged the car in between the two trains.
When the Fire Department arrived they were confronted with a car that was completely smashed and wedged in between two trains with people trapped. They only had less than a 24” space to work in to free the trapped occupants. The rescuers from Squad 26 and Rescue 1 managed to cut away pieces of the car and free a 30 year-old man and a 7 year-old child from the mangled wreckage. Miraculously both were removed with only minor non life-threatening injuries and transported to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The female driver wasn’t so lucky. She was pronounced dead in the wreckage. The operator of the light rail train was severely shaken up and also taken to the hospital.
Howard Street was closed to traffic for most of the day as crews had to remove the deceased victim from the crumpled car. The Maryland Transit Authority had to bring in a special hydraulic lift jack to move the train aside to access the crushed car and remove the victim. She was finally removed from the wreckage around 1130 and transported to the Maryland State Medical Examiners Office. The street and light rail line remained closed while the remaining wreckage was removed and authorities investigated the scene and cause of the accident.
