On November 30, 2012 a fire broke out in the conveyor belt system of the UPS sorting facility in Violetville. At 9:43 AM fire box 34-2 was dispatched for a reported fire in the building. The building sits right at the Baltimore County-City line and a commercial fire alarm signal was also received near the same time by Baltimore City Communications. They dispatched Truck 8 to investigate.
When units arrived on the scene they found heavy smoke coming from the large one-story warehouse facility. Battalion Chief 2, Joe Brown arrived and asked for a second alarm due to the size and layout of the building as well as the heavy smoke throughout. When crews made their way into the building they found a conveyor belt on fire that had been contained by the sprinkler system. This allowed firefighters to find and continue to extinguish the fire. They also began to clear the smoke from the building. Shortly thereafter the second alarm companies were placed in service. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.
