At around 5:22AM on August 18th box alarm 40-8 was struck out for a building fire in the Gwynn Oak section of northwest Baltimore. Units arrived and found heavy fire and smoke from the rear of a 2-story block and frame commercial building that housed a beauty salon in front and apartments in the rear and second floor. Heavy fire was coming from the first floor rear of Side B and extending up to the second floor. Battalion Chief 5 arrived and took command making it a working fire about five minutes later.
Firefighters made their way inside and up to the second floor where they found that the fire had gotten into the walls and extended into the ceiling and through the roof. A second alarm was struck at 5:41. Companies began to open up the walls and ceilings to get to the hidden fire.
The fire was placed under control in an hour. One firefighter was injured and transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
The rear section of the building was partially under renovation and Fire Investigation and Police Arson was requested to determine the cause of the blaze.
