At around 0715 hours on Friday, December 13, 2024 a house fire was reported to County 9-1-1 in the 400 block of Westshire Drive in Catonsville. As units responded to Fire Box 4-1 they began reporting heavy smoke and fire showing in that area. As companies were enroute 9-1-1 was receiving additional calls reporting persons trapped inside and the box was upgraded to a fire with rescue assignment. The first arriving units were greeted with heavy fire showing from the front and side of the house and a large RV burning in the driveway impinging on the house next door. The fire was then upgraded to a working fire.
Two people were reported missing by neighbors who attempted to get inside but were forced back by heat and smoke. They also couldn’t get to the rear yard due to a locked gate on the side. As firefighters began knocking down the fire they entered the house and rescued one person along with a cat and dog. He was then treated and transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma center listed in critical condition. The injured man’s mother was then found deceased in the rear of the house. She was the 13th fire fatality in the County for the year.
The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes. Fire Investigators responded to the scene and were assisted by local agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
No other injuries were reported. There was some moderate heat damage to the adjacent house.
