And yet another fire struck the Shipley Hill area on July 11, 2023. It was a very hot and humid 90 degree day and around 1600 hours Engine 14 was dispatched on a silent alarm to investigate heavy smoke in the area of Frederick Avenue and McPhail street. Around the same time the TV Channel 11 Sky Chopper spotted smoke over the scene and reported heavy fire coming through the collapsed roof of a warehouse in the midst of heavy vegetation between McPhail Street and Calverton Road. Engine 14 requested the fire box be struck out and required exterior operations only on the building. Parts of the roof and walls were collapsing as companies were setting up and access to the building was almost impossible with the overgrown vegetation around it.
Units set up ladder pipes on both sides and attempted to open up the building from the rear. About 20 minutes into the firefight a second alarm was dispatched along with a special call for Tower 1. Communications advised that Tower 1 was out of service so a mutual aid call was made for Howard County Tower 1 out of Elk Ridge to respond. Units continued to pour water into the building for several hours as hot spots would flare up from several areas of the two abandoned buildings. Companies were finally let go from the scene around 2330 hours that evening. No injuries were reported.
