On July 23, 2015 funeral services took place at the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium for a Baltimore City Paramedic who died while on duty. Several hundred firefighters from Baltimore and surrounding jurisdictions attended the service. His casket was brought by Squad 40 and followed by the procession to the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, on North Charles St. where services were performed. Afterwards the long procession made its way up to Dulaney Valley Gardens where all of his friends, family, and co-workers would bid him a final farewell.
On July 14th, 23 year old Nicholas Hemingway was finishing his shift with Medic 11 at the station of Squad 40 on Liberty Heights Avenue. He had complained that he hadn’t been feeling well throughout the day. He was preparing to leave work that evening when he went into cardiac arrest in the station. His fellow firefighters found him unconscious on the floor and began to perform CPR on him. A medic unit was dispatched and on the way to the hospital paramedics were able to get his pulse back and restore his breathing. He was admitted to the hospital where he was tended to and monitored. He later died on July 17th.
He had just graduated from the Fire Academy Class 14-02 on May 5th and in addition to working as a Firefighter/Paramedic with the City, he was also a member of the Bladensburg Volunteer Fire Department in Prince Georges County. Some of those colleagues served as his pall bearers.
He is survived by his mother, Maureen Hemingway of Dartmouth, Mass., and fiancé Natalie Velasquez, as well as grandmothers, aunts, uncles and cousins.
