Right around 1600 hours on January 6, 2020 Box Alarm 46-30 was dispatched for several reports of a dwelling fire at 5219 Wilton Heights Avenue in the Pimlico area of northwest Baltimore. As units responded there was a heavy plume of smoke showing from the area. Companies arrived to find a 2 ½ story frame duplex house heavily involved in fire throughout one of the connected houses. Within minutes the rear of the involved house was starting to collapse and companies were ordered to start exterior operations. When Battalion Chief 5, Mark Ruff arrived he took Command and made it a working fire. The fire was gaining headway into the upper floors and attic of both houses and about 10 minutes later a second alarm was requested,
Ladder pipes were set up in the front and from the adjacent street in the rear as companies worked to protect the exposures on both sides. About 30 minutes into the fire fight another collapse occurred as the front gable, roof and second floor went into the first floor. Firefighters continued to pour water into the structure and it took about 2 hours to bring it under control.
Companies rotated throughout the night maintaining a fire watch until the morning before clearing the scene. There were no injuries reported and Fire Investigation was on the scene to determine the cause.
