On September 1, 2019 the Baltimore City Fire Department reduced it’s running assignments on box alarms, from 5 engines, 2 trucks and 2 Battalion Chiefs to 3 engines, 1 truck, and 1 Chief. On September 9th at 0436 hours Local Alarm 40-70 was dispatched for a dwelling fire at 4015 Maine Avenue in the Forest Park section of northwest Baltimore. Within minutes units arrived and found a 2 1/2 story vacant frame dwelling with heavy fire on all floors and through the roof. The remainder of the box assignment was then dispatched.
Battalion Chief 5 arrived on the scene and took Command and requested the working fire assignment. Companies immediately set up exterior operations and protected the two side exposures. As ladder pipes continued to pour water onto the structure the center roof along with the dormers collapsed into the second floor around 0515. Within an hour the bulk of the fire was knocked down and units continued to wet down hot spots for several hours into the daylight.
