On Tuesday, January 23rd at 1348 hours Baltimore County 911 Call Center began receiving several calls reporting a house fire in the 400 block of Lambeth Road in the Academy Heights neighborhood of Catonsville. The first units responded from the Westview and Catonsville stations and arrived within five minutes and reported heavy smoke showing from a 2-story brick rowhouse. Within minutes fire was blowing out of the front windows as crews were preparing to make entry. A resident was reported trapped inside and the box was upgraded to a rescue followed quickly by a working fire assignment.
Crews gained entry and made their way into the house and while searching found a 70 year old woman on the second floor in cardiac arrest and suffering burns and other life-threatening injuries. She was removed to the outside where Paramedics immediately initiated CPR and other treatment and transported to St. Agnes Hospital. Doctors there provided additional treatment before pronouncing her deceased.
The fire was quickly contained and placed under control at 1457 hours. One family next door was displaced because of the fire. The Red Cross was on the scene to assist them.
Baltimore County Police arson investigators ruled that the fire was accidentally caused by improperly discarded smoking materials. The second fire engine from the Catonsville station was out of service for the day due to staffing issues, but did not seem to have an immediate bearing on the outcome of the fire. No other injuries were reported.
