Around 1315 hours on the hot and muggy day of June 11, 2015 a passerby spotted smoke coming from the roof of the Arbuta Arms Apartments in the 2500 block of West Patapsco Avenue and called 911. Fire box area 47-51 was dispatched for the 3-story garden apartment building. Within minutes units arrived and reported heavy fire through the roof. They immediately began to set up ladder pipes for exterior operations. A working fire assignment was dispatched followed by a second alarm at 1322 hours. This brought additional manpower as well as mutual aid units from Baltimore County to the scene.
Workers had been working on air conditioning units above the third floor and apparently had left an unattended torch burning which sparked the blaze. Once it started it spread to the attic space and eventually burned the entire roof off. The fire wall kept it from spreading to the connected building next to it.
12 apartments in the building were occupied although no one was home at the time of the fire. The nearby apartments were evacuated as a precaution. Neighborhood Services were called to assist the displaced residents of the building.
Temperatures were near 100 degrees and the high heat and humidity took its toll on firefighters as they battled the blaze. Crews were rotated and rehabbed on the scene. One fire Captain suffered heat exhaustion and was treated and transported to the hospital.
