On Sunday, October 5, 2014 at 1447 hours Box area 6-12 was struck out for a building fire in the former Volunteers of America building in the 1100 block East Fayette Street in downtown Baltimore. Units arrived and found heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the 2-story vacant stone structure. Battalion Chief 2 arrived, set up Command and made it a working fire. Companies went to work setting up for exterior operations.
As the heavy smoke and fire intensified Command requested a second alarm at 1456 hours. Companies continued setting up ladder pipes around the building. As companies were pouring water on the blaze fire again broke through the roof on the AB corner. Command then requested 4 more engine companies with a special call at 1521 and another one at 1536. Units continued to flood the building for the next few hours. About 90 minutes into the fire a portion of the roof collapsed in the center of the building.
Water Tower 1 was special called at 1608 and was positioned in the rear alley of the building to access and open up the sealed windows on that side. The truck companies trained their ladder pipes in the center section of the roof that collapsed. The fire continued to burn for 6 hours until it was finally placed under control.
There were no injuries reported and Fire Investigation and Police Arson responded to the scene.
