On Sunday, May 14, 2023 Engine 3 from Woodlawn was dispatched to the 7100 block of Security Boulevard around 1700 hours to investigate an unknown outside fire in the area. Two minutes later the rest of the Fire Box 13-21 was dispatched for a commercial building fire in the Boulevard Place Shopping Center, opposite the Security Square Mall. When Engine 3 arrived they found an active burning gas fed fire on the side wall of a one-story strip mall. It involved several meters that supplied the stores in the mall.
All of the stores were immediately evacuated and companies made their way into the stores and on to the roof top to keep the fire from spreading. Several handlines were in place to keep the wall and roof cooled down as well as keeping the fire in check until the gas could be shut down.
BGE responded to the incident and when they arrived they secured all of the electric to the affected buildings and located the underground gas line. They then dug up the ground to shut off the gas line feeding the building. The gas line was finally shut off at 1845 hours. There was no extension into the building and BGE remained on the scene to investigate the cause of the incident.
