On Tuesday March 7, 2017 around 1400 hours a fire was reported in a building at 1218 Hollins Street. Engine 14, stationed a few blocks away, arrived first and found the vacant, former Hollins Street Pub with heavy fire blowing out of the second and third floor windows. As this and the adjacent buildings were also vacant and boarded up firefighters began opening up to get to the fire and check exposures on both sides. There was a roof collapse inside and units were then ordered outside to battle the fire.
A working fire and second alarm were quickly struck out. The fire was deep-seated inside the unsafe structures and companies breached a brick wall at the end of the row houses to gain another vantage point inside. At this point they still could not get to the stubborn fire and a special call was made for Water Tower 1. The snorkel was set up in the rear of the buildings to pour water into the inaccessible area in between the buildings and attached garages.
The fire was finally placed under control two hours later. No injuries were reported and F.I.B. was on the scene to determine the cause.
