On Saturday, January 28, 2023 around 1030 hours, Fire Box 33-73 was transmitted for a reported dwelling fire in the 1600 block of East Oliver Street in the Oliver neighborhood of east Baltimore. Initial reports indicated people were trapped in the home. The first units on the scene reported heavy fire in the rear on the first and second floors and showing through the roof. Neighbors were also telling firefighters that there were victims inside. Companies were able to knock down enough fire to get inside and found a young child on the second floor in grave condition. He was immediately transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Several special calls in the next 30 minutes brought additional units to the scene. A second child was found inside and was also transported to the hospital and was later listed in stable condition. Both children rescued were 5 year old twin brothers and everyone else in the house were able to escape the flames and smoke. The fire was brought under control within an hour.
The Anne Arundel County Fire Department’s Fire Marshal with K-9 Unit was summoned to the scene to assist Fire Investigation in determining the cause of the fire.
The five year old boy was not immediately identified and an autopsy would be conducted by the Medical Examiners Office to determine the exact cause of death. This was the second person to die in a fire this month. On January 17th a 32 year-old woman died in a vacant house fire in east Baltimore on East Avenue.
