Shortly before noon on Sunday, September 27, 2015 Third Battalion companies were dispatched to an apartment fire in the Irvington section of west Baltimore. Companies arrived at the Woodington West Apartments, located at 12 N. Woodington Road, to find heavy fire from a third floor apartment of a 3-story brick garden apartment building and extending to the roof. The fire had also gotten into the attic space above the third floor ceiling and was running through the attic space under the whole roof. Battalion Chief 3, Fred Ruff, arrived and made it a working fire followed by a quick second alarm. Crews immediately began setting up ladder pipes as the roof was becoming fully involved on both sides. Crews entered adjacent apartments and found the fire above all of the ceilings. The truck companies on the outside made quick work knocking down the fire with several ladder pipes. That allowed crews to reenter the apartments and finish extinguishing the fire from below. A brick firewall in between the two units kept the fire from extending down the entire complex. The fire was placed under control in about 45 minutes.
Everyone had evacuated before the Fire Department’s arrival. Two civilians were transported to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation.
The fire had reportedly started in the third floor unit by a stove left unattended which extended into the cabinets and ceiling.
