At around 3:00AM a fire was reported in a vacant building at North Avenue and Charles Street. Firefighters arrived on location and found a four-story brick building, under renovation, with heavy fire and smoke conditions throughout. Access to the rear was limited due to small alleys and being set behind another building.
Fire eventually broke through the roof and within 45 minutes four alarms were sounded. Ladder pipes and monitor pipes were set up to attack the blaze from all sides and from the rooves of adjacent buildings.
The fire was brought under control within about three hours and units were on the scene well into the morning extinguishing hot spots and investigating the cause. This was Chief Clack's first major fire since he took over command as Chief of Department on April 7th.
