Just days before Christmas, a devastating fire tore through several apartments in the Tuscany Woods Apartments in Woodlawn. Around 0600 hours on the morning of December 20, 2023 Battalion 2 fire companies were dispatched to a building fire in the 1700 block of Rolling Road. When units arrived at that location the fire was actually across the street in an apartment building located at 8 East Bend Court. The first in unit reported fire showing from the second floor balcony of a three-story garden style apartment building. The fire was quickly upgraded to a rescue box followed by a working fire several minutes later. By now the fire had extended up to the third floor and into the attic space and began burning laterally above the other units on the third level. One person was rescued from an upper floor apartment via an aerial ladder and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
A second alarm was requested around 0630 bringing additional units to the scene. Ladder pipes were set up around the building as the roof became fully involved. Firefighters entered the building to pull the ceilings on the third floor to get at the fire above them. A third alarm was pulled eight minutes later and the fire was eventually placed under control around 0915 hours. The MTA sent two buses to the scene to help the displaced residents that were forced into the cold to keep warm.
Thirty units were affected and at least 16 were badly damaged or unlivable. The Red Cross was on the scene to assist residents that were displaced. It was unclear just how many residents were affected.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Baltimore County Police Department. This apartment complex has seen several major apartment fires in recent years and the last one was a 2-alarm fire in July of 2021. 46 people were displaced in that fire and no injuries were reported.
