Shortly before noon on December 29, 2011 Fire Communications received phone calls for smoke coming from the Crown Grocery Store at 3721 S. Hanover Street in the Brooklyn area of south Baltimore. Along with the dispatched assignment mutual aid from Anne Arundel County was also dispatched on the box. As companies approached the scene they had heavy smoke conditions from the 2-story structure with an apartment above the store. When companies arrived and made their way into the building they encountered heavy fire on the first floor burning through the ceiling area into the second floor. Battalion Chief 6 ordered a working fire assignment when he arrived. An aggressive interior attack knocked down the fire and kept it out of the second floor. A thorough search was conducted throughout the building and no one was found inside. There were no injuries reported.
Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours overhauling and investigating the cause. The Health Department was also called to respond to the store.
