At around 5:15 AM fire box 8-11 was sent out for a dwelling fire in the 1100 block West Saratoga Street in west Baltimore. Engine 8 and Truck 10 were first to arrive and reported a vacant dwelling with heavy fire showing and extension to exposures on both sides. This whole block of houses was vacant and slated for demolition. The involved dwelling was partially collapsed prior to the fire. A common cockloft helped spread the fire to several dwellings on either side. It was pretty much an exterior operation until most of the fire was knocked and then the firefighters entered all of the buildings to finish extinguishing hot spots. A second alarm was struck out at 5:36 and the fire was placed under control in about an hour and a half.
One firefighter fell through the floor and into the basement of an adjacent dwelling and was quickly retrieved. He was checked out by medics on the scene and reportedly had only minor injuries. Firefighters remained on the scene for about three hours.
