Close to 300 participants, including area first responders and civilians came together on September 16th for the 11th annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Each participant climbed 2,200 steps, equivalent to 110 flights, synonymous with the height of the World Trade Center.
The stair climb is a way to honor and remember the FDNY firefighters who selfishly gave their lives so that others might live on September 11,2001. The event serves as a reminder of the spirit of unity and resilience that emerged from the ashes of 9/11 ensuring that their memory lives on and the sacrifices of our heroes are never forgotten.
Each participant carried a tag with the name and photograph of one of the 343 FDNY firefighters killed in the line of duty on that fateful day. Each person was encouraged to research the firefighter on their tag to gain a little insight into his life and sacrifices.
The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb events help the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation create and maintain programs that support fire service survivors and provide assistance to the families of firefighters who have died in the line of duty. This year 25 teams and 250 individuals helped to raise about $35,000 for the foundation. The top fundraising team was the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and the top individual was Brad Bondroff.
A reception followed at the Firefighters Local 734 Union Hall across from the stadium. There was music, drawings, and giveaways and Mission BBQ was on hand to provide free meals to all of the stair climb participants.
