On Saturday, May 26, 2018 Haz Mat 2 was on the air driving around the City when he spotted a large column of black smoke from the southern end of the City. He contacted Communications and inquired if there were any reports of fire in the area. At around 1115 hours Sixth Battalion companies were dispatched to a building fire in the 6300 block of Fort Smallwood Road in Curtis Bay.
Units arrived on the scene at 3200 Hawkins Point Road where heavy smoke was coming from a 2-story corrugated metal building occupied by Curtis Bay Energy, a medical waste disposal company. As firefighters made their way into the building fire was burning under the metal grated flooring beneath them. Battalion Chief 6 arrived and took command and requested a working fire assignment at 1125 hours and then a special call for Rescue 1. The fire was contained underneath the floor and brought under control in about 30 minutes.
About 60 firefighters were on the scene with 20 pieces of apparatus including 4 mutual aid units from Anne Arundel County. There were no injuries reported and units remained on the scene for several hours mopping up and decontaminating their equipment.
