In the early morning hours on the day after Thanksgiving a terrible tragedy was beginning to unfold in the peaceful community of Westview Park. Just before 7:00AM Fire Box 13-6 was dispatched for a fire in a dwelling in the 1300 block of Denbright Road. Units from Westview Station 13 arrived at 0659 and reported heavy fire showing from the basement and first floor of a single family one-story house. People were reported trapped inside and firefighters immediately made their way into the dwelling to search for victims. One firefighter that made his way in fell through the floor and went down into the basement. He luckily held on to the hoseline and was able to keep the fire in check while he was rescued. A Mayday was immediately called which prompted an automatic second alarm. Other firefighters quickly got to him and pulled him outside to safety. He was treated on the scene and suffered only minor injuries.
Due to the collapsed floor firefighters then retreated to exterior operations. The fire gained headway throughout the first floor and into the attic space and eventually broke through the roof. Hoarding conditions were prevalent throughout the house and that hampered firefighting efforts. It took about two hours to bring the fire under control. About 75 firefighters and EMS personnel were on the scene.
Once firefighters were able to regain entry into the house, the basement would have to be pumped out for personnel to be able to search for the missing victims. Once that was done a secondary search began they found the 93 year old woman and her 54 year old son, both deceased.
The house was a total loss and investigators continued to search for the cause of the fatal fire. In December of last year another elderly woman died in a house fire in the same neighborhood only a few blocks away.
