Just after midnight on Christmas morning tragedy struck in the Gwynn Oaks Apartments complex on Townbrook Drive in Woodlawn. Fire Box 3-15 was dispatched at 0028 hours for a reported fire in an apartment building. Engine 3 from the Woodlawn Station arrived first on the scene and immediately radioed that he had heavy fire showing and requested a working fire with a rescue assignment.
They had a 3-story apartment building with heavy fire on a second floor balcony extending to the third floor and roof in the rear of the building. People were reported trapped in the apartment. Battalion Chief 2 arrived and requested a second alarm at 0037 hours. Crews made their way into the top apartment and pulled a 7 year-old boy out. The fire was now into the roof and traveling above several units. After all units were searched and evacuated exterior operations commenced. A third alarm was struck out at 0056 hours. Ladder pipes knocked down the bulk of the fire on the roof and top floor units and crews were able to re enter the top floor apartments to search again and finish extinguishing the fire. The fire was placed under control at 0138 hours.
The child that was rescued was transported to Northwest Hospital and then transferred to Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center where he later died from his injuries. One firefighter received non-life threatening injuries. 16 units were damaged displacing 7 occupants. The Red Cross was dispatched to the scene to assist the displaced families.
