Around 0700 hours on July 21, 2016 Truck 25 was dispatched to investigate an oil spill in the 5700 block of Falls Road in the Mount Washington section of the City. After about 30 minutes they found a pool of standing oil in a parking lot in front of 5742 Falls Rd. originating from a broken line in between two 275 gallon tanks of waste oil. After tracking it down they found it had entered a storm drain in the street in front of that location and ran into the Jones Falls stream behind the building. Lieutenant Joe Steele then asked for a HazMat box to be dispatched bringing additional units along with the HazMat Coordinator and crews from the Maryland Department of the Environment to stop and contain the leak. The leak was stopped, but not before 100-200 gallons of waste oil had spilled into the waterway.
HazMat units laid down absorbent on the ground and deployed absorbent booms across the stream to contain and soak up the oil that was on the water. Units were on the scene for most of the day cleaning up the oil on the ground and transferring the remaining oil from the tanks.
