On July 17, 2021 around 3:00PM north and eastern Baltimore County was being pelted by severe thunderstorms rolling through the area. Surrounding companies started responding to lightning strikes and flooded roadways and intersections with stranded motorists. Lightning struck the roof of an apartment building in Parkville which resulted in a second alarm being struck out. Shortly before 3:45PM Fire Box 11-7 was dispatched for smoke in the basement of the Loch Raven United Methodist Church, just a block away from Baltimore County Station 11 in the 6600 block of Loch Raven Boulevard.
Initial responding units responded from Cockeysville, Middle River, Rosedale, Essex, Eastview and Pikesville as the immediate areas units were tied up on many other storm related incidents as well as the nearby apartment building fire. Truck 15 and Engine 71 arrived first at the scene and reported smoke conditions in the basement area. Firefighters made their way into the basement and found an active fire in the kitchen area which was quickly contained and knocked down within 20 minutes.
Thankfully, someone was inside when it started and reported it and was able to get out without harm. No injuries were reported and this was labeled as possibly another storm related incident.
