On Saturday afternoon, November 9, 2019 Fire Box 40-70 was dispatched for a reported dwelling fire in the 3900 block of Maine Avenue in the Forest Park area on northwest Baltimore. When companies arrived they encountered heavy fire on the first floor of a vacant 2 ½ story frame house. The fire was quickly advancing to the rear and upper floors. When Battalion Chief 5, Earl Taft, arrived he took command and made it a working fire.
There were problems with water pressure and now the heavy fire was starting to melt the siding on the exposures on both sides. An occupied frame house was on side B and an apartment building was on side D.
A special call for two engines was ordered to supplement the water supply and a second alarm was sounded several minutes later.
No one was allowed to enter the structure as the roof and second floor collapsed inward. They fought the fire with ladder pipes and large handlines and it was brought under control in about 90 minutes.
There was some minor extension into the side wall and attic on the house on side B. The apartment building was left with just damaged siding on the gable area and no extension inside..
No injuries were reported and Fire Investigation was on the scene.
