At 1319 hours on March 23, 2021 Fire Box 35-1 was dispatched for a reported fire in a row of dwellings in the 500 block of Freeman St.in the Brooklyn section of south Baltimore. Engine 35 which is stationed just a block away around the corner, arrived on the scene and had 4- 2-story frame houses with heavy fire showing from the first two units. These houses are connected by a common cockloft above the ceiling and the fire was spreading through the whole block. A second alarm was requested on arrival. Units went to work with an interior attack and made a good stop on the fire preventing it from taking the whole block. It was brought under control within an hour. Three of the four units were vacant and one occupant escaped from the house where the fire started. There were no injuries reported.
Several minutes into this fire another fire broke out in the 1300 block of Glenwood avenue in northeast Baltimore. This was a rowhouse in the middle of the block and escalated to a second alarm within thirty minutes. These two fires in separate parts of the city put a strain on the departments resources. Several mutual aid companies were called to transfer into the City from Howard County as well as Anne Arundel, and Annapolis City.
