Around 3:40AM on January 20th fire box T15-12 was dispatched for a dwelling fire in the 1000 block of North Broadway in east Baltimore. When units arrived they found a 3-story vacant brick dwelling with heavy fire in the rear wooden summer kitchen area extending up to the second and third floors as well as into the second floor of the side D exposure. Battalion Chief 2 made it a working fire and units began to make an interior attack. As the fire began to spread a second alarm was sounded at 3:48. Units also checked the exposures on both sides. Both of those houses were occupied and all of the residents had evacuated safely.
Most of the visible fire was brought under control within a half hour and as firefighters were making their way into the rear kitchen extension to get at some hidden hot spots one firefighter fell into a hole in the floor and was briefly trapped. A Mayday was declared and firefighters quickly pulled him out of the debris. He had to pull his SCBA off to free himself. Moments after he was freed part of the burned walls and roof fell into the spot where he was just freed from. He was taken to the hospital and checked as a precaution and was found to have no injuries.
Fire Investigation was called to the scene. The Building Inspector also responded and condemned both of the buildings involved.
