A joint Memorial Service was held on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 to honor the three firefighters that were killed when a building collapsed on them while fighting a 2-alarm fire on S. Stricker Street on January 24th. A fourth firefighter that was trapped with them was rescued and survived the collapse. He and his family were in attendance at the service.
Firefighters from all over the country attended. Some from as far away as California, Boston, New York, and even Canada and France showed up. They all wanted to show the world that the Brotherhood was there to support the members of the Baltimore City Fire Department in their time of grief and sorrow.
Among the guest speakers were Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Chief of Fire Department Niles Ford, Local 734 President Richard Langford, and President of the IAFF Edward Kelly.
Battalion Chief Joshua Fannon grew up with Lt.Paul Butrin and made a promise to his family that we will never forget the warmth of his spirit and will strive to embody the qualities of Pauls character of what a Baltimore City firefighter should be. Lacey Marino said her sister Kelsey would have hated all of the attention that she was given today and that she loved life and was loyal and humble to all that she had met. Kenny Lacayo was to have been married in the near future and his fiancée, Clara Fenelon said that she was on the top of the world with him. He was a kind, humble and gentle soul who always put others before himself.
The families were presented with flags that had been flown over the U. S. Capitol Building as well as IAFF medals of honor presented by the IAFF Honor Guard Command Staff followed by the bells being tolled signifying their last alarm.
