At around noon on Sunday, March 2, 2014 Howard County dispatched a box assignment for a reported barn fire in the 15100 block of Roxbury Road in the Glenelg section of the County. Engine 131 from the new Glenwood Station arrived first on the scene and reported a 75' X 100' barn with a working fire. As there are no hydrants in the area units arriving from West Friendship VFD set up two portable water tanks in the driveway on the property and established the water supply. Several tankers and engines shuttled water for several miles from two water cisterns in the area to maintain the water supply. Companies used hand lines and portable monitor pipes to knock the bulk of the fire down from the exterior until the integrity of the structure was determined to be safe and crews could start entering the building. The barn was a block and metal structure that contained about 50-100 large bales of hay that were burning and smoldering. After the bulk of the fire was knocked down a firefighter using a tractor on the site pulled the hay bales out and away from the building and crews wet them down. Firefighters continued to pull the bales of hay from the barn, tear them apart and wet them down for the next few hours.
Command placed the fire under control about three and a half hours later. The State Fire Marshal was requested to the scene to determine the cause. No injuries were reported but 5 sheep were killed in the blaze.
