On January 8, 2021 911 calls started coming in reporting a fire in a store at the Westside Shopping Center in southwest Baltimore. Around 4:30 PM Fire Box 14-60 was dispatched for a fire in the Dollar Tree store located at 2445 Frederick Avenue. The first arriving units reported heavy smoke coming from a one-story store in a strip mall shopping center. Heavy fire was in the rear storage area of the store. Companies began an interior attack but were having trouble reaching the fire. Truck companies on the roof encountered a concrete deck below the roofing material and were having trouble opening it up to ventilate the building. At the same time companies in the rear were delayed in getting the doors opened up. They were bolted and secured from inside and constructed of heavy steel. Units also checked out the adjacent stores for any extension.
Battalion Chief 3 requested a working fire assignment and special called Rescue 1 to assist with forcible entry. After a little bit of time firefighters were able to cut a hole in the roof and the companies inside were able to get a knock on the fire. The rear room was loaded to the ceiling with stock and continued to burn and smolder. Command then requested a second alarm for companies to assist with overhaul and relieve the initial crews. The fire was placed under control in an hour and crews remained on the scene for several hours clearing out the debris. Fire Investigation was also on the scene to determine the cause.
