At 1404 hours on January 8, 2015 Box Alarm 14-6 was transmitted for a reported dwelling fire in the 500 block S. Monroe Street. Engine 14 arrived first and was greeted with heavy smoke coming from the first and second floors of a 2-story brick vacant dwelling at 541 S. Monroe St. Battalion Chief 3, Carl Bull, arrived shortly thereafter establishing Command and requesting a working fire assignment. Engine 14 made entry into the front while Engine 8 reported to the rear and encountered heavy fire which was spreading to the exposures on both sides.
As Engine 14 made their way into the first floor front room they encountered heavy debris making it difficult to maneuver. One of the firefighters became trapped in the debris but was quickly removed by the rest of his crew. Once he was freed they made their way out of the building and Command requested the evacuation of the building due to the dilapidated conditions and amounts of debris inside.
Crews knocked down the fire from the exterior and crews were able to breach the walls in the exposures to knock down the fire in the middle of the original building. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes.
There were no injuries reported.
