Around 0530 hours on Saturday, May 23, 2015 a fire was reported in a dwelling in the 2300 block of Druid Hill Avenue in west Baltimore. When companies arrived on the scene they were greeted with heavy fire and smoke coming from the front of a 2-story middle of the group brick dwelling. There were also reports of people trapped inside.
As firefighters made their way inside one victim was found unconscious on the first floor several feet from the front door. He was removed and as they made their way to the second floor there was a collapse of the roof into the center of the second floor above them. They were then forced to evacuate and begin exterior operations. A second alarm was struck out at 0551 and companies continued to fight the stubborn fire for several more hours. Units made their way into the side exposures to check and stop the fire laterally.
The fire was finally placed under control at 0847 and a crane was requested to remove the collapsed debris to search for the second victim. After removing the debris and wetting down the buried hot spots the second victim was located and removed from the second floor.
Fire Investigation and Police Arson were on the scene to determine the cause. No other injuries were reported.
