Around 0630 on April 18th westside companies were dispatched to an apartment fire in the 4300 block of Alan Drive in the Wilkens area of Baltimore County. When the first units from Catonsville and Halethorpe arrived there was heavy smoke conditions from a 3-story apartment building and several people were hanging out of the upper floor windows calling for help. Within minutes those people were successfully rescued and brought down on ground ladders while the other units made an aggressive interior attack on the fire and searched adjacent apartments for more possible victims.
When Battalion Chief 2 arrived on the scene he quickly made it a working fire and requested the second alarm several minutes later. Mutual aid units came from Baltimore City and Howard County.
The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes and was contained to one unit on the third floor. The fire was attributed to unattended cooking on the kitchen stovetop.
Two people were injured and transported to University of Maryland Medical Center, one with minor injuries and the other with serious but non life-threatening injuries. Six people were displaced from two apartments and the Red Cross was dispatched to assist them. Two cats also died in the fire.
