Shortly after 8:00AM Engine 52 was dispatched on a silent to investigate smoke in the 2800 block of Reisterstown Road. As they were responding Communications dispatched the rest of the box for a reported fire in a 4-story apartment building near the Mondawmin Shopping Center. They arrived to find heavy fire on the top floor blowing out of several windows and extending across the top floor. Battalion Chief 5 arrived and made it a working fire. About 5 minutes later. Most of the building was vacant with the exception of a few occupied apartments on the first floor.
Firefighters made their way to the top through the interior stairs and knocked the fire down before it travelled through the entire floor. There was also some fire on the third floor and it extended to the roof.
One firefighter injured his leg early on and was transported to the hospital. The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes and Fire Investigation was on the scene to determine the cause.
