Just as the morning shift change was taking place on July 7, 2017 Box Alarm 40-70 was being transmitted for a reported dwelling fire in the 4300 block of Maine Avenue in the Forest Park section of northwest Baltimore.
The first arriving units found a vacant 3-story wood frame dwelling at 4211 Maine Avenue with heavy fire blowing out of the first two floors on the D Side. Heavy smoke was showing throughout the rest of the structure. Two large pine trees obscured the front side and the truck companies had to maneuver their aerial ladders through the thick trees for exterior operations. A narrow alley in the rear along with heavy brush and ground cover hampered access to the rear of the house.
When Battalion Chief 5 arrived he immediately called for a working fire with exterior operations and established a collapse zone around the building. Several minutes later he requested the second alarm. Companies battled the heavily involved building for the next two hours before bringing it under control. The fire was burning freely in the center of the house and there was a partial collapse of the roof into the third floor.
No injuries were reported and F.I.B. was on the scene investigating the cause.
