On May 9, 2019 around 1500 hours Fire Box 4-18 was dispatched for smoke coming from a large house in the 2400 block of Frederick Road in Catonsville. The house sits atop a large hill about ¼ mile off of the main road near the Baltimore-Howard County line.
Engine 4, from the Catonsville station, arrived first and was able to secure a hydrant off of the main road and get up the long overgrown driveway to the front of the large 3-story structure.
Heavy smoke and fire was coming from the second and third floors as well as through the roof of the rundown vacant mansion. Crews had to hand carry hose, ladders and equipment to access the fire. Due to the heavy fire and condition of the building Battalion Chief 2 established exterior operations around the dilapidated 200 year-old structure. Access around the building was limited due to overgrown vegetation and trees on the property. A working fire was declared several minutes later bringing additional manpower to the scene.
Firefighters from Howard County assisted in the fire fight and the blaze was brought under control at around 1830 hours. No injuries were reported.
The Victorian style house was built in 1808 and was abandoned in the mid 1990’s. In the past few years it has become a popular attraction for people who like to explore abandoned structures. It also has become a hangout for kids in the area.
