On March 30, 2016 Fifth Battalion companies were dispatched to a dwelling fire in the 5500 block of Groveland Avenue in the Arlington area of northwest Baltimore. Engine 46 arrived first to find a 2 ½ story frame dwelling with fire showing on the front porch. Companies proceeded with hand lines to knock it down and enter the first floor to check for extension. The fire had extended into the porch ceiling and front wall of the house and travelled up into the second floor and attic. Battalion Chief 5 had arrived and taken command and made it a working fire. By now the fire had gotten a good headway before units got to the second floor and started to tear into the walls and ceiling area. As they were working to get into the ceiling heavy fire was burning above them and Command ordered an evacuation of all units. Within minutes heavy fire broke through the roof and Truck 12 began operating their ladder pipe from the front and large hand lines were taken to the rear. They continued fighting the fire until it was knocked down enough to reenter the structure and finish extinguishing the fire on the second floor.
The fire was placed under control within the hour and no injuries were reported. Fire Investigation was on the scene to determine the cause. All of the residents safely exited the building before the Fire Department arrived.
