On March 23, 2008, (B Shift) Box Alarm 2-2 was sounded alerting stations 2, 8, 9, 7, Baltimore Co. 13, BC 2 and EMS 2 for a reported apartment building on fire on Town and Country Blvd. in Ellicott City. Units arrived on the scene with fire through the roof and requested the task force and second alarm. Responding on the additional alarms were units from Baltimore Co. stations 4, 13, 18, and 330, Howard Co. 10, 3, 1 and BC 1 and a host of support staff to assist.
The crews initially started an offensive attack with reports of people trapped. In about six minutes of arrival there was a partial roof collapse and a MAYDAY was sounded. Command (BC2 Mark Richards) initiated the MAYDAY procedures and the RIT was activated. The building was evacuated and a PAR was initiated and it was determined that all firefighters were accounted for but that there were two firefighters injured. Both were transported with non-life threatening injuries to local hospitals.
Command decided to go to defensive operations with ladder pipes and large caliber handlines and the fire was brought under control within 20 minutes. The cause is under investigation at this time by Howard County Fire Investigatiors.
