In the early morning hours of September 15th Fire Communications dispatched Box 14-5 for a dwelling fire in the 300 block of Furrow Street on Baltimore’s southwest side. As Engine 14 hit the street leaving their quarters they saw a glow in the sky and heavy smoke in the area. As they turned the corner off of Frederick Avenue they had a 3-story vacant dwelling fully involved at 306 Furrow Street. They dropped their 5” supply line from the hydrant to the front of the building and began attacking the fire with the 3” blitz line. Battalion Chief 3 arrived within minutes and made it a working fire. Crews also began entry into both exposures and kept the fire in check with some minor extension. At 0155 hours, eight minutes after the working fire, the second alarm was struck out. Companies had most of the visible fire knocked down in about 20 minutes. Part of the second floor collapsed and companies made their way in cautiously to finish extinguishing the fire. The fire was brought under control in about one hour. No injuries were reported and Fire Investigation was called to the scene.
