A 68 year old woman was injured in a 2-alarm rowhouse fire in Highlandtown. Shortly after 8:00AM on December 22, 20145 firefighters were called to the 300 block of South East Avenue. Units arriving encountered a 2-story brick rowhouse with heavy fire and smoke showing from the first and second floor front windows. The woman was rescued from the first floor and was taken to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center with burns to her head and having difficulty breathing where she was listed in stable condition.
Firefighters began an interior attack on the fire but couldn’t make it past the living room on the first floor because of extreme hoarding conditions in the entire premises. Battalion Chief 1 took command and made it a working fire and backed companies out to begin an exterior attack on the flames. A second alarm was struck out about 15 minutes later. The fire was brought under control in 90 minutes but not before the fire eventually broke through the roof and damaged the houses on both sides.
Units remained on the scene for several hours overhauling and removing large amounts of debris from the dwelling and wetting it down on the front sidewalk.
Fire Investigation and Police Arson were on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
