Around 1100 hours on Friday, March 19, 2021 Fire Communications began receiving numerous calls for a house fire reported to be fully involved in the 900 block of Poplar Grove St. in west Baltimore. Fire Box 36-71 was dispatched at 1108 and Engine 36 arrived within minutes and reported a 2-story vacant stand-alone frame dwelling fully involved with fire extending to frame structures on both sides. Sporadic wind gusts of 40 mph fanned the fire as it spread to a single vacant house to the north and an occupied duplex house to the south. Battalion Chief 5 arrived and assumed command and made it a working fire followed quickly by a second alarm at 1114 hours. The fire made its way into the third floor and roof of the occupied house. All three of its occupants managed to escape on their own.
The heavy winds hampered firefighters efforts to control the fire. The fire had gotten into the roof and eaves and crews had to tear off several layers of shingles as well as tear into the walls and ceilings inside to get at the fire. It took about 90 minutes to get the fire under control. There were no injuries reported.
