On Monday, May 16, 2022 around 2115 hours Baltimore County Police Officers responded to a disturbance call in the Security Station Shopping Center in the 1700 block of Rolling Road in Woodlawn. A former employee of the Libra Nails and Spa business returned to the store and refused to leave after getting into a disagreement with the stores staff. After the police were called he refused their order to leave and retreated to the rear of the store. The situation then escalated into a barricade situation. The suspect then started a fire which led to an explosion which injured four police officers and two EMS providers from Woodlawn VFC, as well as himself. He was then transported to the hospital with life-threatening burns to his body. All of the other first responders suffered non-life threatening injuries, mostly smoke inhalation. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and frightening.
The resulting fire required a box assignment that was dispatched around 2130 along with a haz-mat response due to the various chemicals on the premises. The explosion blew out the stores front windows and ended up damaging several adjacent stores in the shopping center. The fire worked its way into the ceiling and roof area. Command then requested a working fire assignment. Units checked for extension and damage to the other stores.
The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and units remained on the scene for several hours along with investigators from the local division of the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives unit. A liquid detection K9 dog from Howard County Fire and Rescue was also sent to the scene.
The former employee remained in custody at the hospital with extensive life-threatening burns and other injuries. All of the other first responders were released from the hospital later that evening and one remained overnight for observation and released the following day.
