For the second time in nine months fire struck an abandoned building on the grounds of the Gundry-Glass Psychiatric Hospital in the Tremont neighborhood of west Baltimore. Just before midnight on June 14, 2022. Engine 53 was dispatched to investigate a brush fire in the area of Wickham Road and Pen Lucy Road. When they arrived on the scene they realized it was a large building back in the woods on the grounds of the former Gundry Asylum. They requested the full box assignment to be dispatched. The property has limited access and there are very few hydrants in the area.
As units made their way to the scene the 3-story stone mansion was fully involved and pretty much collapsed to the ground. A working fire assignment was dispatched at 0004 hours. Companies got water to the scene and along with a ladder company set up a ladder pipe and contained the fire, keeping it from spreading to the woods surrounding the building.
In the next hour several special calls brought more engine companies along with the brush unit to supplement the water supply in the area. The fire was placed under control at 0146 hours.
The Gundry Asylum was originally constructed in 1880 as a private home and named “The Athol” It was bought by Dr. Alfred Gundry in 1900 and converted into The Gundry Sanitorium for Women. In 1988 it was acquired by the Glass Hospital and renamed Gundry-Glass Hospital becoming an inpatient center for children aged 4-12 who suffered from acute psychiatric problems. It was closed down in 1997 and has sat abandoned and vacant since then. A 2-alarm fire destroyed one of the original buildings on September 27, 2021.
