Shortly after 2200 hours on July 23, 2019 Box Alarm 36-1 was dispatched for a building fire at Franklin and Smallwood Streets in west Baltimore. When Engine 36 arrived heavy smoke was showing from the second floor windows of the former American Ice Company, a 2-story block long 108 year old warehouse. Truck 10 arrived on the scene and updated the report with fire showing through the roof. Engine 36 immediately placed their monitor pipe in service to knock down the fire. Battalion Chief 3 arrived on the scene, took Command and declared it a working fire and quickly asked for the second alarm. A special call for Tower 81 was also called for.
Units immediately went into a defensive mode with exterior operations. The building was involved in a 5-alarm fire in March of 2004 and had been sitting vacant since then. The building is presently under renovation and only the front wall is standing on the east side. Most of the fire was concentrated in the west end, AB Corner, where the offices of the previous ice company were located and set about 75’ behind it.
Access was limited to the structure. Amtrak rail lines were located right next to the west side and there was no access to the rear for any apparatus. Units used ladder pipes to reach the fire on the second floor and roof areas. At 2235 Command requested the third alarm and continued to battle the blaze until it was declared under control at 0200 hours.
No injuries were reported and Fire Investigation was called to determine the cause.
