On Tuesday, June 14, 2022 just after 0430 hours Baltimore Fire Communications started receiving numerous calls for a fire reported in the 3600 block of South Hanover street in the Brooklyn section of south Baltimore. Fire Box area 35-70 was dispatched and the first arriving units were greeted with three 2-story vacant dwellings fully involved with one on the end already collapsing. They immediately began exterior operations and a second alarm was called for several minutes later.
The intense heat ignited a telephone pole with attached electric lines in front of the building and power was cut off to the neighborhood. Firefighters began attacking the fire and managed to cut off the fire at an occupied dwelling on the south side of the three dwellings. The exposure on the north side was a storefront building across an alley and had some minor extension inside. Units continued with ladder pipes and monitor pipes as well as handlines in the front and rear of the block. A third alarm was struck out at 0459 hours bringing additional manpower and water supply.
The fire was brought under control several hours later. The three original fire buildings were severely damaged and left in several stages of collapse. Both exposures received minor damage. The same dwellings were previously burned in a fire several years ago and had been left standing, but boarded up since then. The Department of Public Works was called to the scene to tear down the damaged structures. No injuries were reported and Fire Investigation was on the scene to determine the cause.
