On August 19th at 0651 hours Third Battalion companies were alerted for a dwelling fire in the North Bend community of west Baltimore right on the City-County line. Engine 53 and Truck 8 arrived first and reported smoke showing from the 1 ½ story frame single family home at 24 Mallow Hill Road. As they gained entry and made their way in they encountered heavy smoke and hoarding conditions that hampered their efforts to locate the fire. Battalion Chief 3, Mike Rudasill arrived and took command and requested a working fire upgrade 10 minutes later. Fire vented from the side basement windows. They now knew it was a basement fire but couldn’t find the steps to get down to the basement because of all the furniture and junk blocking the doorways. At 0724 Command special called another engine and truck company to assist with ventilation and overhaul. They eventually found their way into the basement to locate and extinguish the fire and it was placed under control about 75 minutes later. Companies remained on the scene for several hours overhauling the debris and wetting down hidden hot spots.
There was one non life-threatening injury to a firefighter. The occupants of the house were not at home at the time of the fire. Fire Investigation was on the scene to determine the cause.
