On Sunday, June 14, 2014 in the early evening a fire was reported in a dwelling in the 400 block South Monroe Street in southwest Baltimore. First-due Engine 14 is stationed only a few blocks away and as they turned off of Hollins St. on to Monroe St. they found a 3-story brick vacant dwelling with heavy black smoke coming from the second and third floors. As they led off and started to advance hand lines both floors lit off with heavy fire in front of them. A large 2-story church was on Side D separated only by a narrow alley way and was now starting to catch fire. Battalion Chief 3 arrived and immediately struck out the second alarm with orders for companies to get into the church and cut the fire off.
Engine 14 opened up their monitor pipe to knock down the bulk of the fire, which was now through the roof of the dwelling, before companies could enter the dwelling. At the same time companies gained entry to the church and knocked down the fire before it could make any headway into the second floor and roof area.
The fire was brought under control in an hour. No injuries were reported and Fire Investigation was on the scene to determine the cause.
